We are often asked about what gear we use in the field, below is information on some of our favorite pieces of equipment:
Tools of the Trade
Night Optics TM-X Thermal Camera
We researched thermal devices for a couple of years and finally found this gem from Night Optics. It features high quality night vision with the ability to select from several color viewing options and even reverse polarity of the image. It can detect heat signatures from over 500 yards away and records still and video images to the built in SD card. It’s also very affordable as far as thermal devices go.
Sony HVR-Z5U HD Video Camera
This HD video camera from Sony’s pro division allows us to take broadcast quality video in the field. This model also provides professional quality audio along with the 1080P video resolution. Although this camera is quite big it is still very portable.
Sony HDR-XR550 Camcorder
This Handicam is compact but packs a punch featuring 1080p video and the ability to take 12MP still photos. The camera also features Sony’s IR nightshot and GPS marking plus it has a 240GB hard drive. If we could only bring one piece of equipment, it’d be this bad boy.
GoPro Hero 3+ Black Edition
This small HD camera can be mounted just about anywhere, the car, your head, your chest. It’s perfect for filming 1st person shots on the trail. The included cell phone app allows you to view a live video feed from your phone.
DJI Phantom 3 Professional
This drone is super easy to fly right out of the box and shots 12.4MP stills & 4k video. With the free app, a live video feed can be streamed to a smartphone or tablet.
Bushnell Bone Collector Trophy Trail Camera
First of all this guy is only 3 1/2″ by 5 1/2″ in size, IT’S TINY! Second, 4 AA batteries lasts 6 months, 8 AA batteries lasts 12. With an 8MP camera and 32 IR LEDs what’s not to love. Oh yeah, it shoots widescreen VGA video too.
Azden SGM-2X Shotgun Microphone
This shotgun microphone records better audio than any onboard mics we have. We use this on a boom pole for filming and in our parabolic mic setup…love it!
Sony UWP-V1 Wireless Microphone
This professional wireless lavalier mic has the rugged housing and long range required for Fathom Frontiers’ field work. Sold by Sony’s pro division this baby plugs right in to your camera’s mic input and even mounts on the camera’s hot shoe interface.
Zoom H4 Audio Recorder
This high quality audio recorder features two studio microphones for crisp clean recording. It records on an SD card, runs on batteries and is small enough to strap on your belt. You can plug an external microphone into it and even record on up to four tracks if needed. Its basically a mini recording studio.
Fenix TK35 Flashlight
With 4 light levels and 820 Lumens this tactical light is often referred to as the best purchase ever made. The aircraft aluminum body is lightweight, durable and waterproof it is a must have for any night ops.
Noxx Dagger X Red Headlamp
This is the ultimate in red headlamps, it has two light modes medium and UFO. You will light up the woods (up to 200 yards) with this baby while maintaining your lower light signature by using a red beam. Fathom Frontiers tested and approved!!
